Nature at Prested

Family of Ducks by moat Bridge over moat Meadow Brown butterfly Daffodils line the drive
With 75 acres of parkland and fields on the doorstep, reeds on the moat, woodland, mature trees and a collection of unusual conifers, Prested has diverse habitats and is a great base for birdwatching and wildlife in general.

We have cleared a path to create a basic nature trail in the belt of trees around the grounds - please take care when navigating it. We have also put up nesting boxes and feeders so there are many opportunities for birdwatchers.

Nearby are the wonderful Essex Wildlife Trust reserves at Abberton Reservoir and Fingringhoe Wick, the RSPB's Old Hall Marsh, and the whole of the stunning Blackwater Estuary. The arboretum at Marks Hall Estate, the Blackwater Valley, and many wonderful pieces of ancient woodland are close at hand, with the Colne and Stour valleys and Dedham Vale within easy reach - see Local Delights. The RSPB reserve at Minsmere is about an hour and a half away a perfect distance for a day trip.

Specialist tour operator Wild Insights has been a regular visitor to Prested, bringing groups of birdwatchers to stay at Prested for visits to the Blackwater estuary, local bird reserves and Minsmere, with evening workshops at the end of each day.
