Trees at Prested
Recently, we had a visit from tree experts from The Tree Register (a unique record of notable and ancient trees in Britain and Ireland), who have made a thorough survey of the trees at Prested. I quote from their letter: "Your grounds are full of really rare and unexpected trees and it was most exciting to find so many survivals from those which were last measured in the 1950s and 1970s. One of the most notable trees is the Foxtail Pine, Pinus balfouriana, near the NW end of the old orchard - a slim straight pine with a silvery bark and dark spiky foliage towards the tip. Only a handful are known in Britain, none much larger. It was just under half its current size when measured by Maynard Greville in 1954." We have a record of every significant tree now, and can make this available to anyone who is interested. |
